20 year sentence for father’s campaign of rape on his daughter

7 Oct, 2019

Emily Verity, earlier in the year, successfully prosecuted a father of repeatedly raping his daughter when she was aged between 7 and 16. The victim became pregnant and had a child, which sadly did not survive. The victim only felt able to report the offences decades later. The man was also convicted of sexually abusing his niece when she was aged between 9 and 12. This week at Snaresbrook Crown Court he was sentenced to 20 years imprisonment for the campaign of rape. An SHPO and restraining order were granted for 25 years.

His Honour Judge Zeidman QC, Honorary Recorder of Redbridge at Snaresbrook Crown Court, sentencing, paid tribute to the courage of the two victims and their families, welcoming the start of the healing process now possible, and thanking them for bringing the defendant to justice.

The Judge described the offences as horrific, unsurprisingly affecting every day of the victims’ lives, and highlighted the deliberate isolation by the defendant of his daughter and the cruel insensitive way in which he responded to her pregnancy. The court adopted in full the detailed sentencing note prepared by Emily Verity for the sentencing hearing.

Emily Verity was instructed by N Calnan of RASSO. The two officers leading the difficult investigation, DC Morris and DC Sears, were formally commended by the court for their tenacious and sensitive handling of the case.
