Following a trial at the Old Bailey before Mr Justice Sweeney in which Tom Little QC led for the Prosecution Ali Ali was convicted on 11th April 2022 of the murder of Sir David Amess MP. The defendant had tricked his way into meeting Sir David at one of his MP surgeries at Belfairs Methodist Church whereupon he stabbed Sir David 21 times in the cause of the Islamic State. In addition the defendant was convicted of preparing terrorist attacks which included but was not limited to planning to attack and murder a number of MPs including Michael Gove MP. Mr Justice Sweeney imposed a whole life order in respect of the murder offence having concluded that it was a case of exceptionally high seriousness justifying such a sentence.
