Amelia Katz has a busy practise across all of Chambers’ core practice areas. She has a broad common law practice and has experience in civil litigation, public law, criminal law, health and social care, mental capacity, family law, inquests and inquiries. The breadth of her practice means she is well placed to conduct complicated cases that require knowledge of more than one area of law.

Amelia has extensive experience in cases across all areas involving complex medical issues, expert evidence and vulnerable persons (including those without litigation capacity).

In her personal injury practice, Amelia is regularly instructed in multi-track cases and acts for both Claimants and Defendants. She is also instructed in high-value clinical negligence cases.

Amelia has extensive experience acting on behalf of Local Authorities, both for children’s and adult services. She also acts on behalf of parents and guardians in care proceedings.

Amelia is Grade 3 prosecutor and has extensive experience in the Crown Courts both prosecuting and defending. She is also regularly instructed by the police in civil applications such as POCA proceedings, sexual risk orders and sexual harm prevention orders.

Alongside her work in Chambers, Amelia undertakes pro-bono work and is particularly interested in improving access to the bar.


Expertise

Amelia regularly acts for both Claimants and Defendants at all stages of a claim. In a recent fatal case involving missed complications following surgery, an admission of liability was secured from the Defendant hospital after she represented the family at the inquest. She has also successfully pursued claims involving mis-prescription and delayed diagnosis. In her Defendant work, she is often instructed to advise on and defend claims of surgical negligence, delayed diagnosis and others. She has been instructed in cases in the High Court and has dealt with cases involving the following:

  • Complications following a negligent C-section;
  • Surgical negligence in a case involving a bowel operation;
  • Mis-prescription for a period of years causing serious health issues;
  • Delayed diagnosis leading to death;
  • Failure to treat sepsis.

Her clinical negligence practice is complemented by her work for the Nursing and Midwifery Council in regulatory proceedings against practitioners accused of misconduct. She also undertakes dental negligence work.

Amelia is regularly instructed in multi-track cases for both Claimants and Defendants. She undertakes the full spectrum of personal injury cases, including occupiers liability, employers liability, road traffic accidents and claims against the police. She has particular experience acting on behalf of motorcyclists who have suffered life-changing injuries. In addition, her common-law practice mans she is well placed to consider claims against the police.

She has extensive experience of every stage of the litigation process. Her experience in Court of Protection and family law cases mean she is particularly adept as an advocate in cross-examining experts. She also has experience of representing those without capacity in personal injury litigation.

Amelia completed her dissertation in costs whilst at UCL and is comfortable dealing with costs arguments arising in the course of civil litigation. She often deals with stand-alone issues on costs and novel arguments.

Amelia regularly represents Local Authorities and parents in care proceedings. She is regularly instructed in cases involving substance abuse, neglect, domestic violence, sexual abuse and inflicted injury. She also deals with cases involving deprivations of liberty and is often instructed in applications under the inherent jurisdiction of the High Court. She is also instructed by the police where there are disclosure issues in family proceedings and has particular knowledge of cross-disclosure issues.

Amelia is also regularly instructed by Local Authorities in Court of Protection proceedings. She has experience across the full breadth of applications and is pragmatic in her approach.

Amelia also undertakes private family cases and represents parties in financial proceedings, applications for Child Arrangement Orders, and for non-molestation, occupation and transfer of tenancy orders. She also has experience of financial matters, including applications for judgment summons.

Amelia has a busy practice providing representation and advice to different police forces on technical issues in a range of applications including:

  • Account freezing Orders under POCA
  • Forfeiture Orders under POCA
  • Sexual Risk Orders
  • Sexual Harm Prevention Orders
  • Closure Orders
  • PII Applications
  • Civil Injunctions

She regularly deals with applications under POCA involving substantial sums of money. She has particular experience in Sexual Harm Prevention Orders and Sexual Risk Orders. She is frequently instructed in the Magistrate’s court and also undertakes appeals in the Crown Court. She is also instructed in matters involving the inherent jurisdiction of the High Court and has particular experience in PII in disclosure issues.

Amelia is a CPS Level 3 prosecutor and accepts instructions to both prosecute and defend. She has conducted trials involving vulnerable witnesses, expert evidence and dealt with victimless prosecutions. She has also conducted cases involving the insanity defence and issues over fitness to plead. Amelia has also dealt with cases involving novel legal issues and is experienced across the full breadth of criminal hearings.

Amelia has also been instructed to represent defendants in the Crown Court charged with serious crimes such as burglary and firearms offences. Her extensive experience prosecuting provides her with an invaluable level of insight as to the best way to present a defence case and she has secured acquittals in numerous cases, including cases involving the importation of drugs.

Amelia accepts instructions to act for interested parties, including bereaved families, individuals and regulatory bodies in inquests conducted at the Coroners’ Courts. She regularly appears in the Coroners’ Court at pre-inquest review hearings and inquests.

Amelia has experience of jury inquests and her extensive experience in dealing with cases involving expert evidence means she is well placed to draw out the key points in any inquest and advise subsequently. Due to her personal injury and clinical negligence experience, she is well placed to consider any further litigation following the determination of the inquest.
