Hugh Rimmer’s practice is focussed on clinical negligence and high-value, complex personal injury claims.

Hugh is recognised as a leading junior in Clinical Negligence by the Legal 500. He is an experienced practitioner who provides advice and representation at all stages of litigation. In cases involving a fatality he also acts for interested parties at the inquest.

In his clinical negligence practice Hugh is instructed in cases involving a wide range of medical specialities, including orthopaedics, cardiology and general surgery. Cases he advises on include misdiagnosis and delayed diagnosis, unnecessary/inappropriate treatment, surgical negligence, pharmaceutical negligence and failure to obtain informed consent.

Hugh has extensive experience in cases involving ophthalmic negligence, and is sought after in particular for cases involving informed consent for cosmetic ophthalmic surgery including laser eye surgery and refractive lens exchange.

Notable Clinical Negligence & Healthcare cases


Representing a Claimant who, following negligently performed surgery, had to have one leg amputated and before the conclusion of the case had to have her other leg amputated.

Secondary victim claims for the parents of a new-born baby who was not adequately assessed by the midwife after delivery, and who died from respiratory problems within a day of birth.

Settling the case of a young Claimant who was inappropriately advised to undergo 5 major knee operations over a period of 4 years, leaving them with unresolved knee pain and the likelihood of amputation in the future.

Represented at trial a Claimant who alleged that, following a serious head injury in an RTA, was not appropriately referred for neurological review and neurorehabilitation, which resulted in a missed diagnosis of post-traumatic psychosis.

Hugh regularly advises and provides representation for both Claimants and Defendants in high-value personal injury claims, arising from a broad range of incidents including accidents at work, road traffic accidents and motorcycle/bicycle accidents, public liability claims

His cases include a wide range of serious and complex claims such as disabling orthopaedic injuries, head injuries and traumatic brain injuries, fibromyalgia and chronic pain syndromes, and fatal accidents

Advising on and settling the claim for an HGV driver who sustained a brain injury after being knocked down by a car driving into the layby across which he was walking.

Advising the family of a driver killed by a falling tree, which had been negligently missed from an inspection regime.

Representing and settling the case of a Claimant in which it was alleged that the accident in which she was involved triggered the development of multiple sclerosis
