Jennifer is a common law practitioner. Having begun her career as a criminal specialist, she has expanded her practice to encompass police law, personal injury, civil fraud and clinical negligence.

She is listed as a Leading Junior in Police Law in the 2023 edition of the Legal 500.

Jennie is known for her attention to detail, her down-to-earth approach with clients and opponents and her persuasive written and oral advocacy.

Outside of her practice, Jennifer is an experienced advocacy trainer and a deputy director of the Inner Temple Pupils’ Advocacy Course. She has delivered advocacy training in Cyprus, Rwanda, Kenya and South Africa. In 2020, she was elected a Governing Bencher of the Inner Temple.


Expertise

Jennie acts on behalf of police forces in cases touching upon all aspects of police law. She is particularly experienced in civil actions (claims for wrongful arrest and false imprisonment, personal injury, compromise of personal data, discrimination, and misfeasance in public office) and actions under the Human Rights Act.

She has also advised on the use of Covert Human Intelligence Sources and the interception of communications data under the Regulation of Investigatory Powers Act 2000 and Investigatory Powers Act 2016. She is particularly experienced in matters of sensitive operational policing, counter-terrorism and the use of covert sources and witness protection measures.

Jennie is experienced in asset recovery; restraint orders and forfeiture proceedings the Proceeds of Crime Act 2002. She is regularly instructed to represent forces in judicial reviews of policing decisions.

She represents forces and other public bodies at inquests and inquiries, with a particular specialism in deaths in police custody.

Jennie acts acting for the Appropriate Authority in police disciplinary and misconduct proceedings, including appeals to the PAT and judicial review. Due to her experience in public and criminal law, she regularly advises on the cross-over between regulatory and criminal proceedings.

Jennie is regularly instructed alone and as a led junior in offences of serious violence, sexual offences, drugs, fraud and organised crime. She is described by her instructing solicitors as a “tenacious and talented advocate” who “brings a professional, friendly and straightforward approach to proceedings.”

She has developed a practice in serious and complex fraud, having completed a secondment with the Serious Fraud Office in 2014. She was part of the disclosure team that lead to the first successful prosecution of a Hedge Fund manager in the UK for conspiracy to defraud.

Jennifer is a co-author of “Criminal Litigation, Evidence and Sentencing” and supervises students undertaking the LLM in Professional Legal Practice.

Jennie has regularly appeared on behalf of the CPS in contempt proceedings and has acted for the prosecution in all stages of confiscation proceedings. Her Masters degree in Trans-National Criminal Justice has equipped her to advise on international asset recovery and mutual assistance.

Jennie is instructed in a range of regulatory and disciplinary matters. For two years, she was a legal advisor to the British Association of Counselling and Psychotherapy, advising on the drafting of charges, conducting proceedings and ensuring that decisions complied with the Association’s rules.

Jennie is on the list of Specialist Regulatory Advocates in Health and Safety and Environmental Law.

Jennie is frequently instructed in fast and multi-track personal injury and clinical negligence cases, including cases involving public liability, occupiers’ liability and defective premises, Road Traffic, Highways Act, Animals Act and employer’s liability claims, industrial disease and psychiatric injury.

She has developed a particular expertise in cases involving intentional assaults and psychiatric injury arising from detention in clinical settings.

As part of her practice, Jennie frequently represents interested parties at inquests and inquiries.
