Theo joined Chambers in October 2019 after successfully completing pupillage under the supervision of Shahram Shargy, Tim Parker, James Thacker and Thom Dyke. He is rapidly developing a significant court and paper-based practice across all aspects of Chambers’ work. Theo is in court on a daily basis, and regularly appears in both the Crown Court and High Court.

Theo is a certificated mediator and accepts instructions to advise on and represent participants at a wide range of ADR methods.

Prior to pupillage, Theo spent one year working as a solicitor’s agent in County Courts across the South-East, instructed upon small claims hearings, infant approvals, CCMCs and a wide range of interlocutory applications. In this role he acquired a thorough, practical grasp of civil procedure and frequently offers advice in this area.

In his spare time, Theo remains a keen armchair philosopher, is an enthusiastic sportsman and an avid supporter of Premiership side Brighton and Hove Albion FC.

Theo is regularly instructed both to prosecute and defend criminal cases in the Magistrates’ Court and the Crown Court. A conscientious and congenial advocate, who has experience deploying the techniques of The Advocate’s Gateway Toolkits, Theo is well-suited to cases involving young or otherwise vulnerable witnesses.

Theo is a CPS Grade 2 prosecutor, conducting trial lists in magistrates’ courts across London and Essex. He also prosecutes appeals to the Crown Court and appears on behalf of the CPS at mentions and application hearings.

Theo represents defendants in the Crown Court charged with serious matters such as burglary, robbery and firearms offences.

Theo appears on behalf of police forces in a wide range of matters, such as forfeiture proceedings, applications for sexual harm prevention orders, sexual risk orders and applications under the Police (Property) Act. He is comfortable making representations on Public Interest Immunity in relation to disclosure of sensitive material in civil/family proceedings.

Notable cases:

  • R v D & Ors [2019] (Magistrates) – The four Defendants were charged with the joint enterprise assault of two victims, alongside individual counts of assault (relating to a third), criminal damage and theft. Having advised on charge, Theo prosecuted the four day trial, successfully resisting the Defendants’ submissions of no case to answer and ultimately securing convictions on all charges.
  • R v R [2019] (Central Criminal Court) – D had pleaded guilty to two commercial burglaries, with fourteen previous convictions for like offences. Theo successfully obtained a suspended sentence, having represented and advised at PTPH.
  • MPS v A [2019] (Magistrates) – Successfully obtained a Sexual Harm Prevention Order against the Respondent, who had a history of sexual offences and was found to have video-recorded a large number of lone women without their consent.
  • R v C [2019] (Magistrates) – Secured conviction in Domestic Violence trial where D claimed V had suffered injuries during sado-masochistic sex.

Theo has a busy personal injury practice, regularly advising and appearing in small claims and fast-track matters, alongside infant approvals, Stage 3 hearings and disposal hearings on behalf of Claimants and Defendants.

Theo also conducts interlocutory applications and possession claims, and has experience in insolvency matters, recently appearing in a bankruptcy case involving approximately £4m of liabilities and a dispute over international assets.

Theo advises on liability and quantum and settles pleadings in personal injury, credit hire and contractual cases. He offers straightforward, pragmatic advice regarding civil procedure and costs.

Client Comments:

“I found Theo’s service excellent, and also his ability to improvise with a few hiccups we had with this file, which resulted in a fantastic result. It was due to his persuasion and legal knowledge!”

Theo is regularly instructed by local authorities and parents in public law proceedings involving substance abuse, neglect, domestic violence and sexual abuse. Theo acts from the initial stages of public law cases (EPO/ICO) through to Final Hearing. He is equally comfortable appearing in applications under the inherent jurisdiction of the High Court.

Theo has a particular interest in cases with an international element and appears in proceedings for Forced Marriage Protection Orders in the High Court.

In the private sphere, Theo represents parties in children and matrimonial finance cases, and in applications for non-molestation and/or occupation orders.

Theo is actively looking to expand his Court of Protection practice. He was recently instructed by a Local Authority to appear in a complex case involving parallel proceedings under the Forced Marriage (Civil Protection) Act 2007 and alleged misappropriation of P’s funds.

Notable Cases:

  • MPS v Bile & Ors [2019] EWHC 1868: Instructed by the Metropolitan Police in an application for Forced Marriage Protection Order. Praised by Mr. Justice Holman [at 14] for his skilled, measured approach to the application.
