The inquest heard that Katy Lowry, who had physical and learning disabilities, died whilst waiting to be examined in A&E at the Royal Cornwall Hospital.
There was a failure to carry out basic observations and a consequent delay in the instigation of intravenous fluids, oxygen and antibiotics. An independent expert advised that had treatment been commenced within an appropriate timeframe Katy would not have died. Following the inquest the Trust apologised for the failings acknowledging that the actions which led to her death should not have happened. The family commented that “this has been a terrible and needless loss of Katy’s life”, that Katy greeted everyone with a smile and without her their lives were less colourful.
Abigail Stamp was instructed by Coodes Solicitors to represent the family.
