Emily Verity successfully prosecutes a man for sexually abusing his 10 year old daughter
News | Mon 25th Sep, 2017
The complainant and her younger sister lived with their mother until she travelled to India in 2011 to conduct business. Their father agreed to care for them for a few months. During their stay with him, he raped his daughter on a daily basis and told her he would rape her sister when she was older.
The complainant kept it secret when she returned to her mother’s care. Soon after, the defendant raped his estranged wife, was convicted and served a prison sentence. When he was going to be released from prison, the younger sister said she would like to see him and the complainant, in order to protect her sister, at last, spoke up about the campaign of abuse she suffered.
Now aged 16 and doing her GCSEs she courageously supported the prosecution. Her father was sentenced by HHJ Finucane QC to 21 years in prison: 18 years, extended by 3 years on the basis that he is a significant risk of serious harm to members of the public, together with a sexual harm prevention order. Although he demonstrated disturbed behaviour in court, the psychiatrists concluded that his symptoms were feigned.
