Local Government

The Local Government team is highly respected for its expertise and commitment to local government work. Clients value the team's knowledge, efficiency and client friendliness at all levels of call. The team, which is led by Simon Butler, provides support and expertise in this complex area of law at all stages of the process.

We are in a unique position to provide a one-stop shop service to local authorities and private individuals due to the broad expertise available in Chambers. Our clients include central and local government, companies and individual claimants.

We undertake a wide range of work from advising officers and councillors about their statutory powers and duties to advising on a wide variety of legislation which councils may use to prosecute in appropriate cases, such as food hygiene, noise nuisance, breach of by-laws, benefit fraud, animal neglect, breach of rules about houses in multiple occupation and many others.

Members frequently appear in courts and tribunals, at public inquiries and in appeal processes on issues such as school place allocations, homelessness applications and in cases of judicial review. Members also have significant experience of dealing with complex local government issues in the High Court and Court of Appeal. We can be relied upon for specialist advice and high-level representation at any hearing.
