London Council fined £66,000 for asbestos failings

Waltham Forrest council have been fined £66,000 and over £15,000 in costs following a successful prosecution for breaching duties under the Health and Safety at Work Act 1974. Claire Harden was instructed by the Health and Safety Executive to prosecute the council.
Waltham Forrest council admitted that they had failed to ensure, so far as reasonably practicable, the health, safety and welfare of their employees and also sub-contractors. Employees and contractors were exposed to asbestos in the basement of the town hall. A survey in 2002 showed the presence of asbestos but the defendant failed to carry out remedial works. In 2012 they asked a company to come in and survey the basement and asbestos was once again found which indicated that nothing had been done since 2002.
As a result those that had used the rooms which included employees and sub-contractors had been exposed to asbestos.
The company pleaded guilty to 4 offences and were fined £66,000 and ordered to pay prosecution costs.
